Most people are surprised to learn that goddesses are mentioned in the Bible—but they’re there. This multi-media talk will show how modern translators collude with ancient Bible writers to obscure biblical references to goddesses. We will also see why some biblical scholars think that ancient people may have understood God as married. You will never read the Bible in the same way again!
The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker earned her PhD with distinction in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Yale University. She is Assistant Professor of Old Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. She is the author of five books and numerous articles. Her most recent book, “Valuable and Vulnerable,” was published by Brown University in November 2013. Dr. Parker earned a Bachelor’s degree at Hamilton College, a Masters of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York, and a Sacred Theology Masters from Yale Divinity School. An ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, she has worked full-time as a congregational minister and as the Protestant Chaplain at Hofstra University. She has also taught at Colby College, Fordham University, and Yale University.
