Our educational trip program is designed to provide you with meaningful opportunities to travel to regional museums, gardens and historic sites without the worries of entrance fees or finding that perfect nearby restaurant. With the exception of the trip to the Madame Alexander and  Mt. Vernon Hotel Museums, transportation to the fall trips is on your own.  Unless otherwise specified, fees include transportation, admission, a private guided tour, lunch and gratuities.  Trip refunds (less a $10 processing fee) are issued ONLY if you cancel 3 weeks prior to the trip date.


Lower Manhattan Walking Tour: Tracing Jewish History in New York and the U.S.Staff
Celebrate Arrival Day, the day in 1654 when 23 Jews arrived in New York Harbor after a harrowing journey fleeing persecution in Recife, Brazil. Led by historian James S. Kaplan, who has been conducting walking tours of lower Manhattan for over 25 years, this unique 3-hour tour will detail the rise of the Jews in both America and the Jewish community in New York. We will begin at the U.S. Customs House at Bowling Green and proceed through Lower Manhattan to the Jewish cemetery at St. James Place. We will discuss individuals such as Gershom Mendes Seixas and Mordecai Noah, who were influential in the development of the Jewish religious community. Financiers Lehman Brothers and Marcus Goldman will be highlighted from an informed historical perspective. Except for a brief visit to the Fraunces Tavern Museum, the tour will be outside. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Tour runs rain or shine.

DAY001: Saturday, September 25. Transportation is on your own. Meet at 1:00 pm at One Bowling Green. Closest subway stop is Bowling Green on the Lexington IRT 4 or 5.

Philip Johnson Glass House - Trip is FilledStaff
We’re offering this popular tour in the fall so you can enjoy the fall foliage on this beautiful site. There are limited tickets to tour Philip Johnson's Glass House, a National Trust for Historical Preservation site in New Canaan, Connecticut. Philip Johnson was one of America's greatest modern architects, designing the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art, numerous homes, New York's AT&T Building (now Sony Plaza), as well as other landmarks. The Glass House is situated on 47 acres and was formerly Johnson's private residence. The 90-minute tour includes a ½ mile walk across the site with access to the Glass House, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery and Da Monsta. Lunch will follow at a lovely Italian restaurant in the charming village of New Canaan. Directions to the Visitor Center and parking information will be sent to participants.

DAY002: Wednesday, October 13. Transportation is on your own. Participants will meet at the Visitor Center, 199 Elm Street, New Canaan, CT at 9:30 am. The Visitor Center is directly across the street from the New Canaan MetroNorth train Station. A van will transport us from the Visitor Center to the Glass House and back. The restaurant is a 10-minute walk from the Visitor Center. Photography not permitted on tour. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Expected return 2:00 pm.

Customized Chocolate Tour a la NYCStaff
Whether you are a chocolate aficionado or just want to indulge your sweet tooth, this 3 hour walking tour will satisfy your cravings. As we wind our way through the streets of downtown NYC you will learn how to taste, purchase, and store high quality chocolates; discover the medicinal role of chocolate and its many health benefits, and learn the inside scoop of today's NYC chocolate scene. We’ll experience chocolate infusions, liquid chocolate, good old fashioned bonbons, truffles, organic chocolate, and cutting edge chocolates made with spices and herbs. If you love chocolate and want to learn more about it, this tour will kick start your passion and provide you with a "real" New York experience. Susan Birnbaum is a native New Yorker who provides fun, informative and unique walking tours throughout NYC.

DAY003: Wednesday, October 20. Transportation is on your own. Meet at 10:00 am for a delicious chocolate breakfast (included in the fee) at Jacques Torres, 350 Hudson, at King Street (1 block south of Houston). Tour will be about 1½ miles and finish at approximately 1:30 pm at Astor Place.

Madame Alexander, the First Lady of Dolls, and the Mt. Vernon Hotel MuseumsStaff
In a "Behind-the-Scenes" customized tour, we will experience 85 years of doll-making history and learn about the social tastes and trends from the 1920s through today. Located on W.131St in NYC, our trip will include a visit to the Heritage Gallery, the doll hospital, and the factory that manufactures the gorgeous Madame Alexander dolls. We'll view the elaborate collection of over 600 dolls, the unique equipment used to make them, and the magnificent haute couture-inspired designs made for the dolls. After a delicious, 3-course lunch at the East River Cafe, we'll tour one of the oldest buildings in Manhattan, and one of New York City's hidden treasures, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum. At this charming site, we'll step back in time with a costumed interpreter and guided social history of the fully furnished period rooms. When this hotel opened in 1826, the hustle and bustle of New York City ended at14th Street, and the hotel advertised itself as "free from the noise and dust of the public roads, and fitted up and intended for only the most genteel clientele." Today, it is still hidden, but only three blocks from Bloomingdale's!

DAY004: Saturday, November 6. The bus will leave Harbor Island parking lot at 9:00 am. Expected return 5:00 pm.

Nueva York at el Museo del Barrio (1613-1945)Staff
The Spanish-speaking world has played a key role in the culture and prosperity of New York City. In cooperation with the New York Historical Society, this special exhibit will include documents, paintings, prints, decorative arts, and artifacts that will uncover previously hidden history of New York's Spanish-speaking peoples. With a privately guided tour we’ll explore the vital role that Latinos and Spanish-speaking countries have played over the last 3 centuries in making New York the most culturally vibrant city in the world. Diana Kesler, our popular Spanish teacher, will accompany us on the tour and join us for lunch at an Upper East Side Spanish restaurant.

DAY005: Friday, December 3. Transportation to the museum and restaurant is on your own. Meet at 10:45 am at El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue (at 104th Street). Expected return 2:30 pm.
